Lewisian gneiss is the oldest rock in the UK, found in Northwest Scotland, forming a crucial part of the Earth's ancient crust, dating back over 3 billion years to the Archaean Eon, known for its distinctive banding from intense heat and pressure, and valuable for understanding early Earth geology. This metamorphic rock complex originated from igneous and sedimentary rocks deep within the Earth, getting baked, squeezed, and reformed into banded quartz, feldspar, and mica-rich layers.
